Fortifications
Over the centuries the Western Alps have been subjected to an enormous increase in building fortification aiming to prevent the transit of foreign troops. The Susa Valley, due to the proximity of several Alpine passes, has played an essential role in defensive strategy: this explains the widespread presence of military constructions in the area, dating from Middle Age to the IIWorld War, with a stratification of historical military architecture: works of particular importance under the architectural and engineering aspect, and as well for its pure aesthetical value.
