The Gran Bosco Natural Park

Salbertrand

Environment Parchi Siti Rete Ecologica Natura 2000

On the Southern side of the Susa Valley extending from 1.000 to 2.600 meters above sea level, the Park encompasses the areas of Chiomonte, Exilles, Oulx, Salbertrand and Sauze d’Oulx. Its purpose is to protect 700 hectares of a mixed stand of silver fir and Norway spruce that is unique in Piedmont. In the past these forests were used to obtain the great straight-grain timbers used in civil and military engineering works, such as the Arsenal of Turin, the Basilica of Superga and the Venaria Reale Castle.

Furthermore the great variety of environment provides an ideal habitat for a broad range fauna: from a large number of raptors,  to mammals such as wild boar the red deer and chamois among the others. Wolves have also returned to the park with frequent sighting since 1997.
